what is a copyright?

A Copyright protects authors of original works including literary, dramatic, musical, and artistic compositions. The Copyright Act generally gives the owner of the copyright an exclusive right to reproduce the copyrighted work, prepare derivative works, distribute copies of the work, and to display or perform the copyrighted work publicly.

A copyright protects the form of expression rather than the subject matter of the writing.
